These "1/2 Round Cabochon burs" are the best tools that I ever thought of. These were created many decades ago and have been the solution to many setting problems for Cabochon Stone Setting.
These burs cannot be bought in any tool supplier, anywhere or at anytime. They don't exist in these 1/2 round shapes. YOU HAVE TO MAKE THEM YOURSELF.
What tools are required? The only required tool is your "Bench-Grinder".
The best and safest holding tool is the screw bur holder, why? You don't need to rub your delicate fingers against the fast-rotating Emery wheel of your bench-grinder.
This application of grinding the Round, or even a Bud-shaped bur can be chosen from any size of bur that you wish.
How large or small of a bur is to be used? I used a smallest round bur of 3 mm's and then up to and including the 10mm round bur.
Here are a few of the 'selected' burs that I used at one time.
How do I hold the Round bur? The answer is so very easy, it is held into place against the rotating "Emery Wheel" and keep dunking the bur into a container of water. If the beaker of water isn't used. The bur will quickly overheat and it will be useless in seconds.
When the bur is against the wheel, keep rotating the bur as often as you can. But remember, to put the bur into the beaker of water as often as possible.
How much of the bur is to be removed? That answer all depends upon how large the Cabochon stone is needed to be mounted into the Tube Setting.
If the bur-teeth are getting worn, the easiest method is to apply the bur against the rotating wheel again.
Always keep rotating the bur, and in a few seconds, you will see that the bur teeth are sharp again as before. What is the cost of this operation? How much are your burs?
I have a selection of burs always in my inventory, ready for that moment of stone setting.
