MORE (details) Channel Settings - 8 photos

In this skill of stone-setting, there are many problems to address, here are a few of them.

What tools are needed in this essay? Only two are required PATIENCE and a Reciprocating Hammer. I'd also include the 'Bud shaped' and 'Round' burs.

The Rate of Difficulty is at 7 =>8 out of 10.

============================

First of all is the hole for each (deep) round stone. These deep stones can lead to untold problems if not prepared ahead of time.

I suggest using a 'Bud Shaped' bur to drill deep into the metal just for the "Pavilion" facet. The size of bur MUST be chosen and dug straight into the hole, but never on an angle.

Clean out any remaining shards of metal from the inside of the hole. If any metal is lodged or remaining in the hole, what will happen?
When the stone is set but NOT cleaned, the stone will be loosened. GET RID OF ALL OF THE REMNANTS OF DUST...NOW!
With a 156C "Undercutting Bur" prepare a seat just for the edge of the Girdle Facet.
Place the stone gently into the hole and check for the depth, just to observe if the stone is not crooked or sitting too high.

The most important viewing feature is the close proximity to each stone. The stones should be close BUT NOT TOUCHING EACH OTHER. Why is this so important?
When the Reciprocating Hammer is securing the stones, they might vibrate and jostle each other. The results will be shattering of the stones.
This is not nice to see and could be very expensive.

In this photo, there is another situation to contend with. There is too much space in between these two stones, it's either 'too much space' or 'they are touching'.
Before any stones are set, it is advisable to 'Rouge' polish the inside of the channel.

THIS IS THE BEST PHOTO for this ongoing pacing problem. There is just 1-2mm's of space, but none are really touching. WOW, eh!

If two stones are overlapping, what occurred and why did it happen? The solution is very easy to rectify.
When the stones were checked for the initial layout, this would have been seen and checked for any problems. But it looks like nothing rectified before any stones went in. PITY!

When Genuine Rubies are set, then the above mentioned 'Rules' will lead to a most favourable Channel Setting.

Just one more point to consider is that the "Table Facets" should be lower that the Channel Walls. If not, the rough wearing by and from some customers could lead to unrepairable damage to the genuine stones. GET THOSE STONES SET LOWER.
