Imagine your metal carvings had a mirror-like reflection on every section of your gem setting?
1) Polishing paper: of #800 grit paper.
2) Various Onglette gravers: They must be continually maintained to be in a pristine condition.
3) If there are any 'rough spots' on the blade, then these rough spots will be seen on the metal cutting.
The length of the graver is of no consequence to the ability to cut well.
This drawing shows why I prefer an Onglette graver instead of a 'Flat' graver. Flat gravers are good, but not essential in perfecting exquisite metal carving.
The 'Bright-Cutting' can only be achieved if the Onglette graver is well-maintained continually. The 'rough spots' can be seen on the right blade.

This is a fine example of a 'shiny surface'. A 'Flat graver' can be used with the greatest results. YES, I will choose a Flat graver under certain circumstances.
