How do you set Marquise Rubies? => 14 photos

These Marquise Rubies are quite strong as they are rated at 9 on the 'Mohs, 10 Scale' of Hardness.

The silver claws are quite wide and cover the two pointed sections of the stone with little effort.

I suggest that a round bur will act as an envelope to hold the stone securely.

It's imperative to use a large bud bur and carve for the pavilion for both sides of the basket, as shown. The angle of cutting MUST MATCH THE ANGLE OF THE STONE.

You can now easily see how the end claws are securing the stone with no effort.

I would even extend the carving of the stone further down, where the round bur was shaping and cutting into the claw.

The end result is that all of the marquise stones have equal separation.

It is advisable to 'pre-polish' the claw setting before any setting of the stones. Once the stones are set, consider that the task of polishing, nearly impossible.

You can see that the points of the Marquise stones are secured; this acts to envelope the two ends.

I would also use a small bud-shaped bur to carve further from the base of each claw into the claw basket. This will give much ease in securing each stone.

This is exactly where the bud-bur is being used.

REMEMBER: The sharp angle of the bud-bur MUST MATCH THE SAME ANGLE OF THE STONE.

With these processes and techniques, there won't be any difficulty setting Marquise gemstones.
